The Benefits of Desktop Registration Software

Dozens of ".COM" companies have tried to offer services on par with LAS for managing youth sports leagues during the past couple of years. Whats more, they make it even more attractive by saying "It's Free!"... Advertiser supported, just like television! What could be better?

Well, there are a number of things that you should consider before deciding whom to trust with your precious registration information, and with all the effort it takes to enter it:

  1. What about Next Year? Already, several of these "dot-COMs" have run out of money and disappeared. Would you rather have an online service somewhere out there disappear with your data, or have a desktop program (like LAS) that will still be on your computer next year (along with all your data), just like it is this year?

  2. Security. Would you like to be able to control what is done with all the players' addresses and phone numbers (and even Social Security numbers!) you're tracking? If it's all stored on your own computer, there's no question! LAS can even be password protected so that not just anyone can get into it. However, a list of addresses, phone numbers and email addresses is a valuable commodity among spammers on the internet.

  3. Speed. Sure, I've got DSL, You've got a T1, and a Friend of mine uses ISDN. Everyone else I know has to poke along using a 56k modem. Realisticly, even over a fast connection most websites take 2-5 seconds to load each page, simply because the server is often busy processing other people's requests. Such delays make accomplishing your many tasks take interminably long! Instead, we recommend zipping through your tasks using LAS, where each window just snaps up.

  4. Reports. When was the last time you printed something off the web? If you never have, try it now... Single pages may look "O.K.", "almost right", or "acceptable", but try something that takes several pages, and you'll recognize that quality printing from web pages is a long way off. There's no way even to stop web pages from slicing the last line of text in half, with parts of letters showing up on both pages!! With LAS, you get a zoomable print-preview of type-set reports, that are constantly improving in beauty. (Plus, you can easily edit them before printing to add your own text wherever you want it!)

  5. Features. LAS has over a decade of development behind it... We don't guess what you'd like to do; we know what you need because of experience! Any new product (or website service) is only guessing at what the "most important" features are that they have to get in there to "go live" before they run out of venture capital!

  6. Stability. It's hard enough to learn how to use an application (or a web-application) once; imagine if that application kept changing... every month, every week, or even every day things could move around on a website making you do things differently. Features that weren't "popular", or that were "confusing" might even disappear! In fact, web sites that remain the same for just a week start being called "stagnant" by some people. On the other hand, LAS has remained consistent in interface over the past decade, making a significant change only to take advantage of the standard Windows interface. And, we just keep adding features! Anything you could do two years ago, you still can do!

  7. Communication with players & members. Only having to click a button to notify everyone of a schedule change (via email) sounds real good, doesn't it? Consider this: How many of your players have email? Statistics say that only about 40% of families in the US do. How many check their email every day? As good as email sounds, it doesn't solve every problem. The good old methods of telephone and US Mail can't under any conditions be completly replaced, even if they can be augmented by internet communications.

  8. Telephone. How many telephone lines do you have? If you are using an online administration site you'll need one line to be connected to the internet continuously, and another for league communications, or else no one will be able to call you while you're working!

The bottom line is that to be truly useful, any registration service or software really should run on your own computer, storing your data locally (for security and control). The internet is becoming more useful for communication each day, but for a complete solution to all your league management needs, look to personal computer software like LAS.

If you don't find these views convincing, give them a try. When you get frustrated with the limitations of online management, remember that there are better solutions out there which can help you leverage the internet to organize your league while remaining in control of your league.
