Determining the proper number of Games per Team
Generally, the proper number of games per team for a single division should be a multiple of [one less than the number of teams]. For example, if your division has 6 teams, then the games per team should be a multiple of 5 (5, 10, 15, 20, etc.) because 5 games produces a complete Round Robin-- everyone plays everyone else once. By increasing in increments of 5, you are simply increasing the number of round robins. If you choose some other number, then each team will not play every other team the same number of times, and sometimes one or more teams will have to play more than the number of games requested so that other teams can play just the number of games requested.
When you have two subdivisions, choosing the proper number of games is more difficult. If you specify not to have any inter-division games in the game ratio then it is the same as two seperate divisions: just set each division's number of games to be a multiple of [ the number of teams in the division - 1].
However, if you want to have some inter-division games you must account for these in the number of games per team in each division. Basically, calculate the number of games you want to play within each division in complete round robins, then decide how many inter-division games you want to have in one of the divisions. Now, take that number and figure out how many game the teams in the other division will each have to play to provide the teams in the first division with that many games per team.
| Division Name | Games per team for a complete RR | Intra Division RR's | Intra Division Games per Team | Inter Division Games | Inter Division Games per Team | Total Games Per Team |
| DivA | 3 | 4 | 3 X 4 = 12 | 16 | 16 ÷ 4 = 4 | 12 + 4 = 16 |
| DivB | 7 | 2 | 7 X 2 = 14 | 16 | 16 ÷ 8 = 2 | 14 + 2 = 16 |
If you have two divisions, DivA with 8 teams and DivB with 4 teams. For a complete round robin in DivA you need 7 games per team, so you decide on two full round robins, 14 games. In DivB, you need 3 games per team for a round robin, and you want four round robins which gives you 12 games. Now, decide how many inter-division games you want. DivA has more teams than DivB, so let's start with DivA: Each team is playing 14 games so far, so let's just add 2 more games per team as inter-division games, totaling 16 games per team in DivA. These 2 more inter-division games per team for DivA (8 Teams) calculates to 16 individual games ( 8 teams X 2 Games / Team = 16 Games ). To provide each of these 16 games with an opponent, the teams in DivB have to provide 16 opponents. 16 opponents for 4 teams calculates to 4 games per team ( 16 games / 4 teams = 4 games/team ). So, to sum up, DivA should play a total of 16 games per team (14 intra + 2 inter )and DivB should play a total of 16 games per team (12 intra + 4 inter). You should also set the Game Ratios to 2 : 4 : 2 (DivA intra RR's : DivB intra RR's : Inter RR's )... this let's GameTime know what the distribution between intra and inter division games in that you are thinking about .
If you set the Game Ratio to have zero for the first two numbers, and a number larger than zero for the third, then the Games per Team is ignored and only Inter-division games are created. See Game Ratio for more information.

"I used to dread little league season, with all the hours of paperwork. Trying to schedule all the teams, registering and keeping track of all the players was an absolute nightmare. Your software was an answer to my prayers!
